Culverts

Culverts under Act 51 county roads are maintained by the Clare County Road Commission.

Culverts under MDOT roads (M61, US 127, and Business 127) are maintained by Michigan Department of Transportation.

Culverts on private roads are the responsibility of the homeowners association.

Bridges and Overpasses

Bridges on Act 51 county roads are maintained by the Clare County Road Commission.

Bridges on MDOT roads (M61, US 127, and Business 127) are maintained by Michigan Department of Transportation.

Surfaces of freeway overpasses are maintained by the Clare County Road Commission.

Ditches

Ditches along Act 51 roads are maintained by the Clare County Road Commission.

Ditches along MDOT roads are maintained by the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Ditches along private roads are maintained at the expense of the private road homeowners association, or the co-owners in a condominium plan.

Drains

There are multiple types of drains

County Drains are maintained by the Clare County Drain Commissioner. Each drain has a district with special assessment to the benefitting properties to maintain the drain.
Drains from lakes with court-mandated lake levels. Clare County Board of Commissioners has delegated these to the Clare County Drain Commissioner.
Private drain easements within platted subdivisions and condominium plans.
These drains are not maintained by the Clare County Drain Commissioner or the Clare County Road Commission, and are the responsibility of abutting properties, a homeowners association, or co-owners within a condominium plan. Those seeking county maintenance through a special assessment district should contact the Clare County Drain Commissioner.
